We would like to caution the public on the numerous types of e-mail and phone scams that have been occurring.
Please bear in mind these simple rules when being contacted either by e-mail or telephone by an unknown organization or person claiming you have either won something or that there is a problem with a financial account you may have.

IF IT SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS! Don't be fooled by e-mails and phone calls claiming you have won money for a lottery you did not enter. E-mails are sent from what seem to be legitimate businesses claiming a lottery prize. Also, there is a Jamacaian lottery scam occurring with subjects calling residences claiming they have a cash prize for the resident. These scam artists ask for banking information so they can "deposit" your winnings. Or, they will give you a phone number to call, which will incur charges your phone bill in the hundreds of dollars.
NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR BANKING INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE TO UNKNOWN CALLERS. If they do not address you personally, it's probably a scam.
NEVER RESPOND TO E-MAILS ASKING FOR BANKING OR PERSONAL INFORMATION, unless it's addressed to you personally, as in your "real" name appears in the body of the e-mail (not "Dear Customer"). PayPal and Ebay have been victims of fraudulent e-mails containing their business name. Remember, these places DO NOT send e-mails to have you enroll, change or provide banking information. Even the IRS has been victim to fraudulent e-mails. DO NOT respond to these e-mails claiming you have a refund waiting. (when was the last time the government contacted you to give you your money back!!!!)
IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF ANY CALL OR E-MAIL YOU RECEIVE, CALL THE VERNON TOWNSHIP POLICE OR THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE POLICE FOR ADVICE. We will assist you any way we can to determine the legitimacy of the call or e-mail.
WORK-FROM-HOME SCAMS -- Be sure the on-line or work-from-home business you get involved in is legitimate! A quick search on the internet of the business name will let you know for sure. Some work-from-home scams say they'll pay you up front and all you will end up getting are forged/bogus traveler's checks in the mail for payment. |
