The Vernon Township Police Department received their first K-9 Unit in 1997. Under the partnership of Sergeant Randy Detzel, the first K-9, Shafer, joined the Vernon Township Police Force along with Sgt. Detzel. Shafer was the first full-time K-9 hired within Crawford County. When Shafer retired, Sgt. Detzel worked with K-9, Greta. Greta retired, and the Vernon Police Department got their latest K-9, Corado. (He is pictured below). Sgt. Detzel was promoted to Chief of Police in October of 2007, and we all know that makes K-9 Corado his second in command! (or is it the other way around?? Corado isn't talking)
Corado is highly intelligent, having passed numerous K-9 unit required tests, and is certified by the North American Police Work Dog Association. He is brilliant with searches, having achieved a 96% positive find rating, and has been used many times at drug raids. He also will gladly assist any other Police Department needing his more-than-human skills.

K-9 Schafer is immortalized as a wood carving placed on the township's front lawn in August of 2007. The carving was commissioned by the Township through donations. The carving is the work of artist/sculptor Brian Sprague of Venango. Pictured below are several local K-9 units who attended the memorial dedication.
